After two seasons away, he is back at Newton.
Andy Preston has been hired as the Railroaders' boys basketball coach, athletic director Brian Becker announced Wednesday. Preston was the coach at Newton for the 2015-16 season and finished 6-14.
Preston replaces Andy Hill, who accepted the same position at Northwest, his alma mater, March 12.
Most recently at Mill Valley, Preston brings some experience to the table. He was an assistant girls basketball coach at Mill Valley for a year and served as an assistant at Valley Center and Newton for five years before earning the head job.
Newton finished 10-12 last season but returns a stable of young talent, including junior guard Ty Berry, who has already received multiple Division I offers.
Becker said he is excited to have Preston back on Newton's sideline.
"He brings a tireless work ethic that will benefit our student-athletes both on the court and in the classroom," Becker said in the statement. "Andy also understands the rich history of Railer basketball and what it takes to compete in the AVCTL."
Newton is seeking its 14th state championship, second most in Kansas basketball history.
