Washburn Rural stops Southeast

TOPEKA — Southeast girls coach LaToya Randle was disappointed with her team's 74-64 loss Saturday night to Washburn Rural. She, like most of her players, felt like they could be competing in the Class 6A tournament this week.

So yes, the loss was disappointing, but her team's effort wasn't. She received the same effort she'd received the last three seasons. The Buffaloes (14-8) ended their season on a down note, but that's because the expectations have been raised by seniors Jamillah Bonner, Kerisha Broadus and Takoya Thompson. They've brought the program a long way since the 2008-09 season when the Buffaloes struggled to five wins.

"A lot people don't realize that they've turned around a program that has been losing for almost 20-something years," Randle said. "They worked hard the first two years to turn it around. The third year they got it going with 15-6, and this year we were 13-7. They're leaving a legacy of winning, and I'm so proud of them. They've left their stamp on Southeast."

Southeast had a rough start this season, but headed into its sub-state championship winning seven of its final eight games.

Southeast trailed by 10 points heading into the fourth quarter and pulled to within four.

"We were going all out," Southeast junior Joyea Marshall said. "We were trying to make history. We were try to make this our best team because we have seven seniors leaving."

But Washburn Rural was too efficient from the free-throw line down the stretch for Southeast to pull off the comeback.

Bonner (19 points) hit a three pointer with 1:02 left in the game, and Southeast trailed 67-63. Rural hit 7 of 8 free throws to close the game.
