Thurman's big game lifts Southeast

Gavin Thurman decided it was finally time to move on.

Southeast has struggled finishing off wins this season, and when it looked like Carroll might rally to continue that trend, Thurman was there to push the Buffaloes along, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in a 61-51 victory on Saturday.

Teammate Hayden Harris added 16 points.

"I think it was just confidence," Thurman said. "We had some heartbreaking losses earlier in the season. We were still stuck on those losses, instead of moving on."

A sluggish Carroll attack finally came alive when Ben Dreiling scored on back-to-back possessions and then Chad Darland drained a three-pointer to cut Southeast's lead to 55-51 with 1:37 remaining. Dreiling led the Eagles with 14 points.

But Thurman was right there with the answer in a driving lay-up and a foul for a 57-51 lead. Thurman also made three of four free throws down the stretch.

"That's what he should do," Southeast coach Carl Taylor said. "I'm pretty happy with his game."

Taylor was still concerned about his team's ability to protect a lead. When Southeast took a 53-42 lead with 3:44 left, it proceeded to give up two offensive rebounds and turn the ball over two times.

"Every possession is very important and that's what I tried to get across to them," Taylor said. "All they do in the summer is (shoot) and it's hurting them when they get under their high school coach."

A tight game early was taken over by Southeast when Carroll's offense went through a dry spell. The Eagles shot 35 percent (13 of 37) through three quarters.

"For about a four-minute stretch, we just went one-on-one," Carroll coach Lonnie Lollar said. "I don't believe our basketball team can play at its highest level when everybody is trying to do it on their own.

"I was proud of their effort the second half, but we lost that game in the first half."

Southeast snapped a three-game slide in the City League.

"We're going to take this one and run with it," Southeast senior Reggie Williams said.
