Heights blasts past Kapaun in second half

It's difficult to imagine Heights ever trailed in its 77-48 boys basketball romp over Kapaun Mount Carmel on Saturday.

Down by one point at halftime, top-ranked Heights outscored Kapaun 47-17 in the second half to come away with its 15th victory of the season.

"It's the best second half we've played all year," Heights coach Joe Auer said. "I can't ask our guys to play much better defensively. We limited (Kapaun) to one shot on almost every possession, then we attacked the basket on the other end."

Heights (15-0, 11-0) held Kapaun (7-7, 4-6) to four points in the third quarter as the Falcons built a 57-35 lead.

Evan Wessel hit back-to-back three-pointers in the final minute for six of his 10 third-quarter points. He finished with 22 points.

"Evan does a little bit of everything for us. He's our utility man," Auer said. "He's our point guard at times, he's our high post at times and he can guard anybody on the floor. He's our leader and I'm glad he's on our side."

"It feels great to be needed like that, especially on this team," Wessel said. "I owe a lot to my teammates for that success. It's great to be on this team."

The 27-4 run in the third quarter ended any chances of Kapaun being the first team to beat Heights this season.

"Holding them to four has a lot to do with why we scored 27," Auer said. "We forced them into tough shots and then we were off to the races."

Heights' Perry Ellis had 14 second-half points and a game-high 26. Michael Martin led Kapaun with 12 points.

"Once we lost that first-half lead we started to panic a little bit," Kapaun coach Bernie Pearson said. "I just thought Heights came out with a little more fire in the third quarter. It seemed like we didn't have enough energy to find our second-wind and make a game of it."
