Heights solves Junction City

Junction City put in a new offensive set this week for its sub-state semifinal against the Heights boys Thursday night.

It worked well for a quarter as Junction City kept close, trailing 18-16.

Top-ranked Heights adjusted its defense and held Junction City to 17 points the rest of the game.

Heights won 68-33 and advanced to the sub-state final Saturday at East High.

"They ran a really good Princeton-style offense to start the game which we haven't seen all year and that's my fault," Heights coach Joe Auer said. "I thought the kids did a really good job of adjusting. We've got a very smart team."

Perry Ellis scored 25 points, grabbed five rebounds and blocked four shots for Heights. Evan Wessel added 13 and E.J. Dobbins had nine.

In the first quarter, Junction City's Gavin Brown, held scoreless for the first 15 minutes, stood at the top of the key, turned and dropped off three assists to cutting guards while Heights never got there defensively.

After the first quarter, Ellis didn't allow the same space to Brown.

"Perry did a great job on him all night," Auer said. "The last three quarters were about as good as we can do defensively."

The whole second quarter was a big Heights run. Wessel made a three to start it. Ellis scored six in the quarter, all the while Heights held Junction City to three points and one basket.

"I just wanted to get this first game over with, it's all I could think about all day," Ellis said.

Junction City (7-14) never got going after its great start. It made 8 of 37 shots after the first.

"We were hitting the early shots and the offense really had the flow going," Junction City coach Mark Moneypenny said. "I think they kind of got intimidated a little bit in the second quarter. We knew it was going to take a perfect game from us on the defensive end."
