Northwest sails to sub-state final

The Northwest girls' quick start led to a Class 6A sub-state victory over North 46-19 on Wednesday night.

Brianna Caldwell and Mac Millspaugh each had 13 points and Kylee Simon added six points for Northwest.

Northwest (15-6) has won 6 of 7 games, its only loss in that stretch coming to No. 1 Heights, and advanced to Friday's sub-state final against Maize.

"We did a nice job of coming out and stepping on them early," Northwest coach Jim Mernagh said. "We're playing well and this is the time to do it."

Northwest led 10-0 and extended it to 13-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Caldwell scored six of her 13 in the first quarter and the Grizzlies grabbed eight offensive rebounds.

"We did a better job of hitting the boards offensively tonight than we have," Mernagh said. "Kylie, Mac and Bri all did a nice job there."

The first-quarter dominance wasn't anything new for Northwest, as it outscored North 49-11 in three first quarters this season.

"Our girls just do a nice job of coming out ready to go," Mernagh said. "They're ready to roll, they sure make us look good."

North made 2 of 17 shots in the first half and Northwest led 31-5.

The Grizzlies forced 14 turnovers in the first half while only giving up four.

"We really wanted to get down on the defensive end and prevent them from scoring, which we did," Caldwell said.

North (7-14) didn't start Jaleesa Dennis and Caleigh Beshears because they were late, and was without Kelli Tyler. Naomi Rosales led the Redskins with seven points.

"They would help but I'm trying to build a program, trying to establish some boundaries," North coach Jeanne Daniels said. "We didn't play very well, but we had a lot of young kids on the floor most of the time, so it was tough."

For Caldwell, it was all about getting to Friday's sub-state final.

"It feels awesome and we're just ready to play on Friday and go to state," Caldwell said.
