Southeast sews up victory

The Southeast boys have had plenty of growing pains this year, as the Buffaloes have lost more than their fair share of games in the fourth quarter.

Against West on Thursday night, Southeast showed it could close out a game as it held off a late West rally to win 65-52.

With three minutes left, West trimmed Southeast's 14-point lead to five and it looked like another opponent was ready to steal a game late.

But led by Reggie Williams, Southeast outscored West 14-6 the rest of the way.

"My kids, I'm real proud of them," Southeast coach Carl Taylor said. "They hung in there, played defense as a team, we played very well."

It was quite the opposite to what Taylor was used to seeing from the Buffaloes.

"We lost eight games by a total of 40 points this year down the stretch in the fourth quarter," Taylor said. "They are growing up, they are getting better."

An 11-3 first-quarter lead put West behind early and it took until the fourth quarter to break Southeast's control of the game.

West's Jamez Jones, who finished with 24 points, threw down a one-handed alley oop that sparked an 8-1 run and brought West to 51-46.

"We were behind the whole game and just trying to battle and battle," West coach Phil Daignault said. "I wanted to keep it close going to the end of the game because I know we never go away. We're going to keep battling."

Williams made 5 of 6 free throws after West's run and West never got any closer.

"You're watching our team grow up before y'all's eyes," Southeast's Joseph Randle said. "We're growing at the right time, each game and doing everything we can possible."
