Kapaun shuts off Pioneers

As in their first meeting Dec. 8, Kapaun Mount Carmel's boys basketball team found itself in a tight battle with West.

Then the Crusaders held the Pioneers scoreless for nearly five minutes of the final period and went on a 20-0 run for a 76-50 City League victory Friday night at West.

During that span, senior Dyllon Knox scored eight of his 20 points as Kapaun's lead ballooned from 52-44 to 72-44.

And Kapaun (6-3, 5-3), which defeated the Pioneers 64-53 in December, needed those points to subdue a West team riding on emotion.

Afterward, Kapaun coach Bernie Pearson said he was relieved that his team could break away. The Crusaders committed eight first-quarter turnovers, which frustrated Pearson so much that he had to call timeout with 3:52 to play in the period.

They committed six in the entire second half.

"We talked about doing the little things, about execution; if we can do that for four quarters, we can give ourselves a chance to win the game," Pearson said.

He said that when Kapaun was able to beat West's press, it paved the way for the 20-0 run.

"They got down and started pressing, and we went from 11 to 20-plus (ahead) in a matter of minutes," Pearson said.

West coach Phil Daignault said that the Pioneers' adjustments just didn't work against the Crusaders.

"We were rushing so hard that we were leaving them open on the back side for easy layups," he said.

West's Jamez Jones matched Knox with 20 points of his own.

Just as in Tuesday's victory at South, Kapaun had to contend with an unexpected hot shooter. This time, it was West's Jawan Scruggs, who scored the first points of the game, then followed that up with three three-pointers and finished with 13 points.

But outside of Jones and Scruggs, West had difficulty. Meanwhile, the Crusaders capitalized using their depth.

Emotions ran high on both sides, and it wasn't until the final run that Kapaun took the West crowd out of the game.

"The score does not reflect the intensity of the game," Daignault said.
