Bell leads Carroll past West

Sometimes shooting well isn’t a requisite for a basketball team to earn a victory.

And in trying to ease the transition with several inexperienced players on the court this season, Bishop Carroll’s boys aren’t concerned with how it wins.

Carroll made two shots outside of the paint on Friday night at West, but were able to handle the Pioneers 62-53 by focusing on its foundation, Blake Bell.

“When you have 6-foot-6 Blake Bell and they have 6-4 guys, just percentage-wise, he’s going to make more than us making outside shots,” Carroll guard Chad Darland said.

Bell finished with a game-high 27 points, 16 of which came in the paint.

Neither team cared to settle for outside shots against zone defenses the first three quarters. As a result, Carroll took a 43-29 lead into the fourth.

West (1-6, 0-6 CL) closed to within 56-53 on the heels of four three-pointers in the fourth. But three turnovers in the final two minutes allowed Carroll (3-4, 3-4) to score the game’s final six points.

“The Wichita West High basketball team never gives up,” Carroll coach Lonnie Lollar said. “That’s what I love watching when they play.”

That’s the problem, however, for West coach Phil Daignault, who has grown tired of moral victories.

“We seem to be known for it,” Daignault said. “It seems like it’s the only respect we get. But we always end up on the losing end. We work hard and just bust our tails and it just seems like it never goes our way.”

West wasn’t packing its zone in, but Carroll could usually produce an inside shot with its offense.

Brian Rohleder scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half, mostly in the paint and from the line.

As a team, Carroll made 28 of 34 free throws.

“We just had to work with what the defense gave us,” Rohleder said.

Daylin Thomas, Dorian Flournoy, Jamez Jones and Jawan Scruggs combined for 40 of West’s 53 points.

The game wasn’t decided until Bell sank two free throws and then finished the win off with a dunk.

“I was wide open,” Bell said, “so I wanted to throw it down. It was a fun game.”
