CHENEY — Cheney used a 30-point second quarter to put distance between its girls and Garden Plain, and the second-ranked Cardinals rolled the rest of the way for a 74-43 victory Friday night.
Juniors Ally Nikkel, Kylie Patterson and Merissa Quick combined for 20 of the Cardinals’ 30 points in the second period — with Nikkel hitting 7 of 8 free throws.
From there, Cheney coach Rex Casner only had to rely on Nikkel’s steady hand at point guard, and she responded with a game-high 21 points.
“I wouldn’t want anyone else running the show for us besides her,” Casner said of Nikkel. “She’s an outstanding player, she’s really heady, and I thought she did a good job defensively, too.”

“We’re really fortunate to have her running the show out there.”
Meanwhile, Garden Plain put up 19 first-half points to Cheney’s 43.
“I thought defensively in the first half, we did a good job of limiting the shots that they were getting,” Casner said. “They really got out and ran the floor in the second quarter like we teach them to do. We got out and got in a little bit of a run and put the game away in the second quarter.”
At one point, Garden Plain was held without a field goal for about nearly four minutes of the second quarter. Meanwhile, Cheney gained a 24-point halftime advantage.
In the second half, Garden Plain managed to get a 17-14 advantage after three quarters, only to see Cheney extend the lead in the final period by outscoring the Owls, 17-7, in the period.
“Defensively, we expect a lot, and we’re trying to dictate what the offense does, and I think our girls worked
awful hard,” Casner said. “I thought our girls did a good job of not giving them any easy looks.”
Patterson finished with 16 points, including two three-pointers, and Quick contributed 13.
Garden Plain coach Sara McCormick said the second quarter was critical.
“They had multiple layups and free throws, and if they’re going to have layups on us, it’s going to be hard to stop,” she said.
