All-Metro Girls Tennis: Five state champions headline the inaugural team
The Wichita Eagle and Varsity Kansas is happy to announce the inaugural All-Metro Girls Tennis Team.
Brittany Steven - Bishop Carroll, Singles, Sr.
Steven put together an outstanding senior season. She finished 21-6 and captured the Class 5A singles runner-up spot for the second straight year, beating Reagan Boleski, Kapaun freshman and the U.S. Tennis Association’s Junior Player of the Year in Kansas. Steven was one of the leaders of Carroll’s second state championship team and first since 2012.

Clara Whitaker - Kapaun Mt. Carmel, Singles, So.
Whitaker was Wichita’s most dominant singles player for the second straight year in 2018. She captured back-to-back Class 5A singles championships with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Steven to help her to a 31-1 record. Whitaker said winning four state championships in four tries has been her goal since her freshman year, and with a second in hand, she is on pace to achieve it.

Hannah Geoffroy, Sr./Sydney Lair, Sr. - Collegiate, Doubles
As part of Kansas’ most accomplished tennis program, Geoffroy and Lair etched their legacy in 2018, winning their second straight Class 4A doubles championship. The pair helped Collegiate to another team title and finished the season 18-1 with its only loss coming to the Class 6A champions. Lair said the 2018 title was tough as she and Geoffroy beat Wellington’s Kylie Aufdengarten and Rylee Rusk 6-5, 6-1 in a thriller of a final.

Kylie Martin, Sr./Michaela Martin, So. - Hesston, Doubles
The Martins showed the potential of a sister pairing. They finished 2018 26-4 and won the Class 3-2-1A doubles title with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Kansas City Christian’s Juliet Bartels/Emily Arnold, who they beat to win their regional as well. The Martin sisters went out on top with the title match being Kylie’s final before heading to Kansas State in the fall.

Darren Huslig - Bishop Carroll, Coach of the Year
Huslig won his first team title in 2018, helping the Golden Eagles to their second Class 5A girls tennis championship. Carroll qualified its entire team for the state tournament, and that proved to be the difference as the Eagles edged rival Kapaun by five points 44-39 to capture the No. 1 spot. Huslig also led Carroll to a regional championship and the City League title.
