Here are some of the top tennis teams and players in the Wichita area this spring:
3. Bishop Carroll
5. Arkansas City
7. Andover Central
8. Conway Springs
9. Valley Center
1. Rodney Steven, Bishop Carroll, Sr.
The defending individual champion in Class 5A is back for one more run. Steven beat Arkansas City's Berett Hollis 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 in the final for the second straight year. He is going for the three-peat in 2018.
2. Nolan Schrader, Sr./Kaden Stewart, Sr., McPherson
Schrader and Stewart are one of the area's only defending doubles pairs returning this season. Both seniors, they are poised to make another run at a state title. For Schrader, he is seeking his third straight appearance in the state doubles final.
3. Lakelin Conrad, Collegiate, Sr.
Bishop Miege's Will Grier beat Conrad in the Class 4A individual title match last year, but Grier has graduated. Conrad seems ready to sit atop the individual power rankings in 4A and should ride a lot of motivation into the 2018 season.
4. Jackson Oxler, Sr./Ty Stranghoner, Bishop Carroll
The Carroll pairing finished fourth in Class 5A doubles in 2017. The duos that won state, from Topeka West, and the third-place finishers, from Mill Valley, were both senior-laden teams. Maize's runner-up Chase Schreiner will have to find a new partner, which might leave the door open for Carroll.
5. Pierce Klaassen, Arkansas City, Jr.
Klaassen took third in the Class 5A individual race last year. He returns for his junior season and should lead a talented Arkansas City group that finished second in the team competition in 2017. Now competing in Class 4A, much of the competition has not seen Klaassen yet.
