Kapaun golfers get back in groove

Just a week ago, there was frustration in the Kapaun Mount Carmel girls golf program.

The Crusaders were coming off a loss to rival Bishop Carroll by 13 strokes and for the first time in a long time, there was some concern about defending their streak of City League titles.

Once the season concludes next month, Kapaun might look back on that loss as a turning point in its season.

After defeating Carroll earlier in the week, Kapaun put together another strong performance Wednesday at the North High Invitational.

The Crusaders finished in second place at Sim Park, shooting 349, which was two strokes better than Andover and seven strokes better than Carroll and Andover Central — all of whom are contenders in Class 5A.

Garden City won the team title with a 311 and was led by Mackenzie Thayer's 72.

"Last week was a wake-up call and we knew that if we played poorly again that teams would beat us," Kapaun coach Dan Phillips said. "I think this adds to our momentum heading into the league meet next Tuesday."

Kapaun had been in desperate need of just one of its players posting scores around 40 and got that from Courtney Wells, who shot 80 (41 on the front, 39 on the back).

Wells was consistent, making birdie on the short par-3 sixth and on the par-4 11th. She also added nine pars.

Two double bogeys and a triple bogey kept her from an even better day.

"The two sevens were canceled out by the two birdies, which was good — I was pretty happy," Wells said. "The course was playing for low scores and I even could have made a few more putts."

Phillips added: "Girls needed to step up and Courtney certainly did that."

Madison Murphy from Bishop Carroll shot 77 and finished second. She chipped in for birdie on No. 8 and added her second birdie on No. 11.

Murphy had four three-putts, so she too could have been in contention for medalist if it weren't for a shaky putter.

"I hit a lot of drives straight and a lot of greens in regulation," Murphy said. "I think my game is getting geared up for the postseason, but I just need to practice putting and get it straightened out."
