An escape counts for just one point, but it played a critical role Saturday in helping two wrestlers win championships at the Rose Hill Invitational.
Andale senior Anthony Capul ran his record to 34-0 at 195 pounds, but had to work to keep it. Valley Center’s Sam Weldon had a 1-0 lead heading into the final period. Capul took the lower position and slipped away for a point that tied the match.
In overtime, Capul, top-ranked in Class 4A, managed a takedown for a 3-1 triumph.
“It was big,” Capul said of the escape. “I didn’t really open up as much as I wanted to, but it was good to get (the match) tied up. He’s a real tough kid.”
In the extra period, Capul said he sensed some fatigue in Weldon and tried to use that for a takedown.
“My shape was good,” he said. “I could feel him breaking down. I was beating on his head a lot, just putting my hands on him, and I could kind of feel him getting tired, so that definitely helped me a lot.
“The third period and overtime just comes down to who wants it more.”
Weldon, also a senior and ranked No. 3 in 5A, has only lost to Goddard’s Cale Davidson (twice), top-ranked in 5A, and Garden City’s Zeke Herrera, No. 1 in 6A.
“That was a great match between two awesome wrestlers,” Valley Center coach Tate Lowe said. “Whenever you get two big guys like that who can move, it’s real exciting and fun to watch.’
In the 152-pound class, Mulvane senior Anthony Scantlin (No. 1 in 4A) also brought in an unbeaten mark into the final against Valley Center’s Don Boone (third in 5A).
This time, the lack of a one-point escape was crucial in the outcome. Scantlin managed an escape in the second period, and held on when Boone opted was in the lower position in the third period, clamping on a hold and denying Boone any chance for the tying point in a 1-0 decision. The victory was Scantlin’s fourth of the tournament and gave him a perfect 31-0 mark.
He said he faced some good challenges at this tournament.
“It’s been good and tough all four years,” Scantlin said. “I’ve just got to stay calm and get hand control. (Against Boone,) I was just quick off the whistle and got hand control.”
Mulvane coach Rick Langerot said Scantlin has been a lot of fun to have for four years.
“He wrestled probably the best competition we’ve seen all year to this point,” Langerot said. “He wrestled smart all the way through. Anthony is very good on top. He can run his wings and wrists and things like that. He’s just top-notch on top.”
Valley Center benefited from second-place finishes, placing four wrestlers in the finals and easily taking the team title by 21 points over Derby.
The timing of the tournament falls just right for Valley Center, Lowe said.
“(Class) 5A is real deep, but we don’t shy away from competition, we look for it,” he said. “So, we’ve just got to continue to rise.”
