Blue Valley Southwest’s Nigel Hayes headed in the game-winning goal off a corner kick with six seconds left in the game, beating Kapaun 4-3 on Friday night in the Class 5A boys soccer semifinals.
Kapaun Mount Carmel will face Bishop Carroll in the third-place game at noon Saturday. Carroll was defeated by St. James Academy 2-0 in the first semifinal.
“(Losing the game) is hard because with six seconds left, you don’t really have time to absorb it,” Kapaun coach Anthony Cantele said of his players. “They deserve better and they got unlucky. They gave the effort and it wasn’t meant to be. We’ll get over it but it hurts right now.”
Southwest scored the game’s first goal, but Kapaun took a 2-1 lead before halftime with a pair of goals by Thomas Wells.

“(The goals) were all because my teammates were giving me the ball,” Wells said. “(The ball) landed at my foot and I was able to finish them.”
Kapaun goalkeeper Joseph Chessmore had seven saves in the first half.
Southwest tied the scored when Aiden Bates scored off a long thrwo in by Maclain Petri with 27:03 left to play.
One minute later, Wells scored his third goal to put Kapaun ahead 3-2.
“He’s a great finisher,” Cantele said. “He’s the kind of guy that is going to give you the effort all the way through.”
Southwest, however, did not take long to tie the score again. A goal from Ethan Diedel off a assist from Jordan Garrett made it 3-3 with 25:02 left to play.
Wells broke free from two Southwest defenders for a chance at his fourth goal, but his shot was stopped by Southwest goalkeeper Trenton Hailey.
Southwest had two threats in the final five minutes. A save by Chessmore stopped one, and the left goalpost stopped the second.
In the first semifinal, St. James scored a goal in each half, ending Carroll’s eight-game shutout streak. St. James goalie Jake Dunsmore made six saves to keep Carroll off the scoreboard.
