Carroll beats Maize again, advances to 5A soccer quarterfinals

Bishop Carroll beat Maize 1-0 in a Class 5A regional soccer championship game on Thursday at Carroll, sending the Golden Eagles to a quarterfinal game on Tuesday.

The win gave Carroll coach Mike Skaggs his 100th career win at Carroll. Carroll will play host to Andover at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the quarterfinals. Kapaun will face Salina South at Stryker Complex in the other 5A Central/South Central quarterfinal matchup.

“I’m just proud of the boys, it’s all about them,” Skaggs said. “Some of these guys have been here for 55 of (the 100 wins).”

It was the third game this season between the teams. Carroll won one game in a shootout and the other ended in a tie.

Carroll’s ninth shot Thursday resulted in the Golden Eagles scoring the game’s only goal with 9:09 left in the first half. Corbyn Howard passed to Dawson Lee on a breakaway for the score.

“(Corbyn) put the ball perfectly right to me,” Lee said. “I just slid (the ball) into the corner of the goal right past the keeper.”

Carroll outshot Maize 11-2 in the first half.

Maize’s Antonio Melchor broke free with 32 minutes left in the second period, and was within inches of tying the score. A deflection from Carroll’s Braden Huslig and a kick out of bounds from Alec Bevis prevented the tying goal.

Maize had three free kicks from dangerous attacking positions in the final 10 minutes, but couldn’t score.

“On two of the three (free kicks), we didn’t get a good strike on the ball,” Maize coach Jay Holmes said. “You have to take advantage of those opportunities come playoff time and convert on one of those. When you don’t, it usually costs you.”

Each team took seven shots in the second half.

“I’ve got a lot of all city guys in the back,” Skaggs said. “We just got beat up all day, and just kept getting up and playing hard. We did a great job of calling for balls and winning balls. We’ve got 11 really, really strong guys.”
