Area roundup: Conway Springs sweeps through CPL

Conway Springs became the Central Plains League champion on Friday night with a 34-12 victory over Cheney at Cheney.

Conway (7-1, 7-0 CPL) entered the night tied with Chaparral atop the CPL. But Chaparral lost at Garden Plain.

Trenton Jones had 132 rushing yards and a touchdown, and teammate Colton Terhune added 105 rushing yards.

City League

Northwest 83, Southeast 21 — The Grizzlies’ dominant offense came through again as Northwest clinched a share of the City League title with Heights and Carroll. The three teams were 1-1 against each other during the regular season. Northwest is the eight seed and plays host to Topeka next Friday, while Southeast is the No. 15 seed at Manhattan.

West 41, East 7 — West won the battle of 2-5 teams and will play at Junction City in the first round of the 6A playoffs next week. East plays at Garden City.

Pittsburg 50, North 6 — North scored in the fourth quarter to avoid a shutout and will play at top-ranked Derby in next week’s first round of 6A playoffs.


Augusta 28, Andover Central 7 — Luke Dockers scored two touchdowns and Ceetyn Anderson returned an interception 56 yards for a touchdown to ensure Augusta’s home win in Class 4A-I district play. Dockers rushed 24 times for 130 yards.

Eisenhower 41, Arkansas City 21 — The host Tigers scored 22 fourth-quarter points for a win over Ark City. Eisenhower will play at Andover next Friday in a Class 5A first-round game, while Ark City travels to Maize. Park Wenzel rushed for 139 yards and Justin Moore 106 for Eisenhower (3-5).

Derby 53, Campus 0 — The host Panthers, already the state’s top-ranked team, won easily to seal up the top seed in the Class 6A western bracket. Derby (8-0) will play host to North next Friday. Brady Kooser scored three first-half touchdowns and Lachlan Jones scored twice in the half, staking Derby to a 40-0 halftime lead.

Clearwater 28, Trinity Academy 27, OT — Trinity Academy’s point-after try in overtime failed after both teams had scored touchdowns in the extra period. Trinity trailed 21-0 at one point before scoring three straight touchdowns to reach OT.

Maize South 41, Rose Hill 18 — Brett Parke rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns, and Jordan Maxson added two scores as the host Mavericks won. Griffin McBride had five catches for 145 yards and a touchdown for Rose Hill, while Grant Moore threw for 254 yards.
