6A softball: Derby falls in rain-shortened game to Olathe East

The rains were all around Blue Valley West High on Thursday afternoon and they finally hit with heavy rain and wind after 61/2 innings of Derby’s game with Olathe East.

Derby trailed 7-3, but because the game was stopped by the heavy weather, the score reverted back to the last completed inning, giving Olathe East a 6-3 victory.

It was the sixth consecutive trip to state for Derby.

The Panthers behind 6-0, but scored three runs in the sixth.

Senior Kenzi Young walked to open the sixth and stole second. She scored on a triple to right center by freshman Madi Young.

Young scored on a ground ball to shortstop by senior Madison Werner. The shortstop elected to throw home and the throw was off line.

After two were out, senior Kori Tullis tripled to left to score Werner with the third run.

It was Olathe East junior Elise Byers that gave Derby problems. The shortstop was 3 for 4 with three doubles and three RBIs.

The game between Washburn Rural and Wichita Northwest was rained out. It’s rescheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, with the semifinals to follow. The championship game has been moved to 11 a.m. Saturday.
