Maize South junior Wells Padgett capped a whirlwind 24 hours with the Class 5A boys golf championship Monday.

Padgett’s sister got married over the weekend in Mexico, and he hadn’t picked up a club in six days when he arrived at Emporia Municipal Golf Course.

On top of that, there was a three-hour delay because of rain. Fortunately Padgett, playing as an individual, had completed nine holes before the rain hit.

After the delay, he returned to the course and shot a 4-under-par 32 on his second nine holes for a 2-under 69 – the only player in the field to finish below par.

“I got home last night from my sister’s wedding in Mexico, which was a blast, got home at 10:30, got to bed at 11, not playing golf for six days,” Padgett said. “I didn’t hold a golf club until this morning.”

Still, he managed to get in half of his round until the rain affected the course.

“Everything felt a little weird, the club just felt different weights and stuff,” he said. “(On the back nine), I knew I had to shoot a good round. Started off hot with a birdie on my 10th hole. I just did what I needed to do. I knew 69 would be a winning number, maybe 70.

“I did what I had to do today.”

St. Thomas Aquinas ended Kapaun Mount Carmel’s four-year reign atop the team standings, finishing with a 299 total to the Crusaders’ 307.

Class 4A – Rose Hill finished second at Bentwood in Ulysses, three shots back of champion Hays. Collegiate finished three shots behind Rose Hill for third place.

Rose Hill’s Parker Austin finished third with a 3-over 75. Collegiate’s Jack Larsen finished seventh with a 76. Andale’s Pete Carney had a 77 for 10th place.

Other state tournaments – Hesston finished second as a team in 3A despite not having a golfer finish in the top 10.… Sterling was fourth and Cheney fifth in the 3A team standings.
