South boys earn state trip by beating Northwest

Malcolm Tate and Cortez Harper scored 14 points each and teammate Dawson Gunter had 13 to lead South past Northwest 64-63 in a Class 6A sub-state final on Saturday night at South.

The Titans (13-9) will play in the state tournament this week at Koch Arena.

Michael Duncan led Northwest with 23 points. Duncan also grabbed eight rebounds. Lorenzo Ruffin added 17 for Northwest, going 7 for 11 from the field.

Other boys

Rose Hill 53, Wellington 46 – Brett Bonar scored all of Rose Hill's 14 first-quarter points, winding up with 27 to lead the Rockets into the Class 4A-I tournament. Bonar hit three threes in the opening quarter. Ian King grabbed 15 rebounds and scored seven points for Wellington.

Garden Plain 63, Independent 55 – Zach May had 14 points and Luke Heimerman had 12 for Garden Plain in its Class 3A sub-state final at Cheney. Alex Becker (11) and Alex Mannebach (10) were also in double figures for Garden Plain, while Chris Taylor led Independent with 19 points.

Girls

Garden Plain 48, Cheney 32 – Garden Plain took a nine-point first quarter lead and didn’t surrender it to win its 3A sub-state final. Taylor Joplin led the Owls with 14 points, while Haley Albers’ 20 led host Cheney.

Wellington 46, Rose Hill 33 – Point guard Lauryn Snipes scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to help unbeaten Wellington earn a berth in the Class 4A-Division I state tournament. Snipes scored 10 of her points inthe first quarter. Grace Mitchell scored eight of her 17 points in the four quarer. Anna VanDriel led Rose Hill in scoring with 15.Garden Plain at Cheney
