Sub-state roundup: Davon Gill, Marquis McCray lead Heights to sub-state final

Davon Gill had 14 points and Marquis McCray added 12 to lead Heights to a 57-35 victory over Newton in a Class 5A sub-state boys basketball semifinal at Heights.

Heights (19-2), the City League champion and defending 5A champ, will play host to Kapaun on Friday for a state tournament berth.

Heights built a 27-20 halftime lead, then outscored Newton 15-3 in the third quarter. Tevin Berry led Newton (6-15) with 10 points.

Eisenhower 66, Great Bend 35 – Matt Pile had 18 points and Dylan Vincent had 17 to help Eisenhower (20-1) cruise into a sub-state final at home on Friday against Maize South.

Salina South 77, Valley Center 67 – A 25-9 third quarter helped host Salina South (15-6) get past Valley Center and into the 5A sub-state final. Salina South meets rival Salina Central for a state berth Friday. Valley Center (7-14) had five players in double figures: Ryan Garcia (19), Wyatt Lange (14), Tyler Brown (14), Payton Burns (11) and Nathan Brown (11). Trace Kochevar had 30 for Salina South.

Girls

South 60, West 1 – South (21-0) held West (1-20) scoreless until a free throw in the fourth quarter. The three-time defending 6A champion Titans will play host to Garden City in Friday’s sub-state final. Kendrian Elliott had 14 points and Brittanie Brickhouse had 11 for South.

Derby 62, Southeast 23 – Host Derby (18-3) scored 28 first-quarter points and cruised to a 6A semifinal win. Kennedy Brown led the Panthers with 19 points.

Northwest 53, North 36 – Ziara Davis, Cori Carson and Haley Cooper scored 11 points each to lead host Northwest to a 6A sub-state semifinal win. Northwest (10-11) will play at Dodge City on Friday for a state tournament berth. Marissa Evans (13 points) and Danisha Brown (10) led North (3-18).

Free State 50, East 17 – Host Free State (14-7) built a 20-6 first half lead, then held East (7-14) scoreless in the fourth quarter.
