Conway Springs trailed by one entering the fourth quarter, but senior guard Dylan Murphy took the lead with a three-pointer on the team’s next possession and never trailed again in a 52-42 victory over Cheney that kept the visiting Cardinals from sharing the Central Plains League championship with Garden Plain.
Murphy redeemed himself after his technical foul in the third quarter for bumping Cheney’s Noah Schomacker, which turned a one-point lead into a four-point deficit. Murphy was taken out of the game but returned to score 9 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter.
Murphy’s big fourth quarter was the result of Conway Springs finally solving Cheney’s extended 1-3-1 zone defense, which led to weakside buckets in the post. Cheney tied the game at 38 with 7:22 left but missed on several three-point attempts that allowed Conway Springs to put together a game-clinching 11-1 run.
