Girls roundup: Wellington stays unbeaten, clinches AV-CTL IV title

Wellington’s girls basketball team won its first AV-CTL IV championship Tuesday, getting 15 points from leading scorer Grace Mitchell in a 52-32 victory over visiting Circle.

Wellington (19-0, 9-0) plays Clearwater on Thursday with hopes of completing an unbeaten regular season.

Lauryn Snipes had 12 points for Wellington. Emily Dennison led Circle with nine points.

City League

Heights 55, East 35 — Senior Athena Alvarado scored a game-high 18 points for Heights (14-5, 12-3 City League), while Samauria Powell added 10 points. Robin McCoy led East (6-13, 5-10) with seven points.

Carroll 74, West 4 – Ashley Carrillo had 16 points to lead Carroll, which clinched a tie for second place in the league (15-4, 13-2).

AV-CTL

Newton 35, Hutchinson 27 – Kyndal Bacon and DesiRay Kernal had eight points each for visiting Newton (14-4, 9-2 Division I). Newton stayed tied for first in Division I with Derby with one game remaining.

Andale 42, Collegiate 33 – Collegiate got within 23-17 late in the third quarter, but Andale went on a 10-3 run with two baskets apiece from Kadey Dreiling and Jill Bergkamp and never trailed. Dreiling had 16 points. Lo Johnson led Collegiate with 14 points.

Maize 64, Salina Central 36 – Taylor Holmes and Lauren White had 13 points each for Maize (14-5, 8-3 Division I).

Goddard 51, Arkansas City 39 – Madison Smith scored 14 points to lead host Goddard (15-4, 9-2). The Lions remain one game behind division-leading Andover Central with one to play.

McPherson 71, Augusta 45 – Host McPherson (17-2, 9-0) stayed atop Division III, getting 19 points from Taylor Robertson and 15 from Mandi Cooks. Jayden Marlnee had 12 points to lead Augusta (8-11, 3-6).

Clearwater 40, Mulvane 37 – Alli Klausmeyer’s 15 points helped visiting Clearwater (6-13, 2-7) hold off Mulvane in the fourth quarter. Emma Chambers had 25 to lead Mulvane (1-18, 0-9).

Rose Hill 43, El Dorado 42 – The host Rockets held off El Dorado’s comeback attempt and got 17 points from Anna Van Driel. Kayln Beel led El Dorado with 16.

Salina South 58, Campus 43 – Cheyenne Bosley led the host Colts (2-18, 0-12) with 11 points.

Central Plains League

Garden Plain 55, Belle Plaine 26 – Taylor Joplin had 18 points to lead Garden Plain (18-2, 8-1), which sewed up second place in the CPL.

Independent 48, Medicine Lodge 36 – Lea Coccetella had 13 points to lead visiting Independent (13-7, 6-3). Laura Chamorro had 17 points to lead Medicine Lodge (10-10, 4-5).

Trinity Academy 67, Bluestem 51 – Kaleigh Schrag scored 16 points and Alex Bearup had 14 to lead visiting Trinity (10-10, 5-4). Bluestem (3-17, 2-7) was led by 10 points each from Rileigh Boline, Natalie Bevan and Michaela Korte.
