The basics: Goddard led 12-0 before Andover Central scored its first basket with more than five minutes gone in the first period. The Lions went on a 21-0 run over a span of five minutes to take a 34-6 second-quarter lead while shooting 12 of 16 from the field, including 5 of 8 from three.

The offense: Goddard usually relies on defense, giving up less than 35 points, but has struggled to score, averaging 42.8. The Lions’ 59 points was only the third time they’ve scored more 50.

Goddard’s Madison Smith made her first four three-pointers and finished with a team-high 15 points, all from three. Senior Sam Schwab added 14 points and 12 rebounds, and C.J. Wilhelm had 11 points.

The comeback: Andover Central ended the first half with a 14-1 run and then went on a 20-3 run over the third and fourth quarters to get within 20-45-42 with 4:51 remaining.

Amanda Kakoulias led Andover Central with 18 points and eight rebounds. Lexie Tilson had 14 points, eight rebounds.

“When you’re up big, sometimes that’s the hardest time to play because how aggressive are you? How much time do you try to run?” Goddard coach Kevin Hackerott said. “I think we got on our heels a little bit. We held the water long enough and did enough to get the win.”

The finish: Schwab scored inside for the 47-42 with 4:22 to go, and after an Andover Central offensive foul, Goddard’s Jessica Gardiner scored for the seven-point lead.

Goddard made 10 of 15 fourth-quarter free throws.

“We made our free throws, and that helped a ton,” Schwab said. “We still made shots down the stretch. It was mostly our free throws that won us the game. If it wasn’t for those, we would have lost.”

What it means: Goddard (14-4, 8-2 AV-CTL II) remains a game behind Andover Central (13-6, 10-1) for the league title. Andover Central is at Arkansas City next Friday.

“It’s pretty great since we never beat Andover Central since I’ve been here,” Schwab said.
