State softball: Hillsboro to meet Silver Lake in Monday 4A-II final

Hillsboro’s softball team won twice Sunday to advance to the Monday championship game in the Class 3A tournament in Manhattan.

The Trojans (24-1) shut out Riverton 2-0 in the afternoon semifinal, despite collecting two hits, to reach Monday’s 11 a.m. final against Silver Lake.

Hillsboro scored single runs in the third and fourth innings against Riverton. Trojans starter Julie Sinclair pitched three innings and Allison Weber finished for the victory.

Hillsboro advanced to the semifinals by slipping past Wellsville 2-1 in a quarterfinal game earlier Sunday.

Hillsboro scored once in the first inning and also threw out a Wellsville baserunner at the plate. The Trojans scored another run in the second inning as insurance.Sinclair struck out eight.

Two other south-central Kansas teams didn’t fare as well in Sunday’s quarterfinals.

Haven was no-hit by Silver Lake in a 4-0 defeat. Megan Deitler of Silver Lake struck out 13 and took a perfect game into the fifth inning before hitting a Haven batter.

Lyons-Chase lost 5-1 to Humboldt in another quarterfinal. Breanna McClure had Lyons’ only run on a solo homer. Silver Lake later defeated Humboldt 5-1 in the other semifinal.

Riverton 7, SE-Saline 3

Class 4A-II – No. 2-seed Clearwater lost to Chapman 3-1 Sunday in a 4A-II quarterfinal in Topeka.

Chapman scored two first-inning runs and let pitcher Abby Sweet take over from there. She didn’t walk a Clearwater batter and struck out three. Clearwater, which committed three errors, finished the season 17-4.
