Friday roundup: Mulvane upsets McPherson in Class 4A-I opener

The Mulvane Wildcats pulled off one of the bigger upsets of the first round of the state football playoffs, beating host McPherson 28-25 on Jace Price’s 5-yard touchdown catch from R.J. Rieger in the fourth quarter.

Rieger had 156 yards for Mulvane (5-5), which will play host to Topeka Hayden (9-1) in next Friday’s Class 4A-Division I quarterfinals.

McPherson, which was playing without injured quarterback Kyler Kinnamon, was led by Cody Starkel’s 151 passing yards.

Class 6A

Junction City 17, West 6 — West quarterback Chaz Capps scored the Pioneers’ only points in the first quarter of the first-round loss. West finishes its season at 2-8.

Class 5A

Maize South 36, Liberal 0 — Maize South racked up 443 offensive yards as it shutout host Liberal. The Mavericks will play host to Salina South in the quarterfinals next Friday. Quarterback Korie Frausto had two rushing touchdowns and a passing touchdown. The defense held Liberal to 148 offensive yards and recovered two fumbles.

Class 4A-I

Buhler 49, Ulysses 37 – The visiting Crusaders rushed for 496 yards and had touchdowns of 66, 98, 88, 57, 58 and 35 yards. Buhler got big nights from Dillon Engelland and Jace Williams and advanced to a quarterfinal home next Friday against Andover Central.

Class 4A-II

Andale 49, Smoky Valley 18 — Andale improved to 10-0 as it extended its streak of winning by three or more touchdowns to seven games. Andale will play at Concordia next Friday in the quarterfinals. Concordia (8-2) defeated Pratt 28-20.

Clearwater 14, Wamego 7 – Clearwater shut down Wamego through three quarters as the Indians won their second straight game to improve to 4-6. Clearwater willl play host to Holcomb in the quarterfinals next Friday.
