Darkness engulfed Bishop Carroll’s Nick Meyer.

Someone had pulled their Jeep into the grass field at Northwest to shine headlights down the ramp for the pole vault, but the bar, standing at a City League record 16 feet, 1 inch, had been swallowed into the blackness of Friday night.

As Meyer blindly sprinted toward history, all he remembers is the clapping. His witnesses will remember Meyer making the perfect plant, leaning back far enough to catapult himself over the bar and into the record books.

“It’s almost unfathomable,” Meyer said about breaking East’s Tim Riley’s 38-year-old record of 16-0¾. “I couldn’t see the bar at all. I went up and sent up a prayer. It was answered and now it’s just…cloud nine.”

On his descent, Meyer funneled all of his energy into a fist pump then bounced right off the mat, let out his emotions and wrapped his coach, Denis Fraizer, in a bear hug.

“I’m glad I broke 16, but I’m glad I can share it with (Fraizer) now,” Meyer said. “He’s one of my best friends. I practice with him every day. I see him every day. We talk every day. He helps me every day. I feel like this record is ours.”

It was just one of many victories for Carroll on the day, as both of its team won the team titles at the City League meet. Katherine Dillard was a part of four wins (400, 800, 1600 relay, 3200 relay) and Madelyn Halstead became a four-time javelin champion, while David Thor (1:55.92 in 800, 4:18.88 in 1600) and Gage Garcia (12:30.16 in 3200) became three-time champs in their respective events.

North’s Amber Eichkorn won her third consecutive title in the 1600, running the state’s second-fastest time in 5:06.52.

But the spotlight on the track once again belonged to the sprints, and the City League didn’t disappoint.

On the girls’ side, Heights’ Taylor Chandler went from having never won a league title to winning four in one day. She swept the 100 (12.22) and 200 (25.56), won the long jump (17-5) and ran a leg on the winning 400 relay team.

“It means so much to me to finally win,” Chandler said. “I worked really hard this year for this, harder than I’ve ever worked in the past.”

Southeast’s Steven Calloway has been remembered more for his flat top fade, complete with a streak of blonde this season, but he registered his finest day yet on Friday. He won the most competitive races of the day, the 200 in 21.83 and 400 in 49.12, then ran winning legs on Southeast’s 400 and 1600 relay teams.

“That does a lot for my confidence,” Calloway said. “It seems like the days I feel like I’m not it are the days I do really good. And I definitely didn’t feel in it after the 200 prelims, where I stumbled out of the blocks.”

While there were a plethora first-time champions, none could match the story behind West’s Tabitha Carter, who won the high jump based on jumps at 4-10.

Carter, who won regionals last year with a 5-2 jump, had to teach herself again how to high jump after giving birth to a child last year.

“Winning this means so much more to me because of everything I’ve gone through in the last year,” Carter said. “I thought I would never be able to do this again, so today was a big confidence boost for me.”
