Andover’s Agnew improves best high jump

The bar stood almost as tall as her, but it wasn’t the biggest challenge to Andover freshman Jaylyn Agnew.

As she soared over the bar in the girls high jump at the Valley Center Invitational on Thursday, Agnew had just conquered the 5-foot-5-inch mark. But the jump, which is now the best in Class 5A and tied Andover’s school record, wasn’t the only victory.

“I have to convince myself that I can do it,” said Agnew, who opened the season last week with a 5-4 jump. “The most important thing to me is my confidence. Just saying, ‘I know I can get over that’ over and over and just accelerating and exploding.”

Hays left little doubt who the best boys team was, racking up 173½ points to take the title while the Bishop Carroll girls edged Garden City by three points for the team title. Katherine Dillard (800 meters), Kaelyn Balch (3200) and Brady Nordhus (300 hurdles) all won their respective events, as Balch’s victory virtually sealed the title for Carroll.

Goddard Eisenhower sophomore Natali Engle placed second in the 100 (12.65) and 400 (1:01.11) and edged Derby’s Alyxis Bowens by one hundredth of a second to win the 200 in 25.81.

“I’m really starting to pick off where I ended last season,” said Engle, who qualified for state in all three events. “I’m really starting to trust my body more and rely more on my faith. My coaches have helped me out so much and I can only see it going up from here, so I’m really excited.”

Last season, Goddard’s Nick Betts showed himself what he could do by triple jumping a state-best 47-feet, but he was inconsistent. This season Betts has dedicated himself to become steadier. He’s well on his way, as he’s posted the state’s top two marks — 47-1 last week and 46-8½ on Thursday.

“I didn’t get that state title last year, so that’s what I’m going for now,” Betts said. “I jumped that 47 and then my marks went down. I’m a lot hungrier now and I’m pretty proud of myself because I’m a lot more consistent this year.”

In the field events, Mulvane’s Trent Songster stood out with a personal-best throw of 172-11 to win the javelin. His improvement isn’t a surprise, as Songster has long been preparing for his senior season.

“Ever since last year ended I’ve been going to the gym every day or every other day and I researched a lot of javelin skills and how to improve in the weight room,” Songster said. “I’ve worked a lot on improving my speed and strength, a lot of abs and core and getting my arm strength up.”

Even though he has one of the top throws in 4A, Songster doesn’t think he’s peaked.

“I haven’t hit that pop yet,” said Songster , who threw 170-8 last week. “I’m still waiting for that one, but right now I’m sticking at a pretty good average and I’m getting better every meet.
