Bailey Holt’s smile stretched almost as far as her game-winning hit.
Holt’s high one-out drive down the left-field line drove in Madison Bish with the winning run as Mulvane edged defending Class 4A softball champion Andale 3-2 Monday evening.
“I knew that I needed a base hit,” Holt said. “My teammates were giving me a pep talk, I was keeping in mind what Coach (Charles Mason) had said to stay level, and I got the hit.”
The Wildcats’ victory took some of the sting out of an 8-0 loss to the Indians (3-1) in the first game of the doubleheader. Sydnee Eck shut down the Wildcats (3-3) on two hits. Holt, the Mulvane catcher in both games, had been held hitless until the seventh inning of the nightcap.

Mulvane appeared determined to earn the split, using Destynee Donaldson’s arm and bat in the second game and taking a 2-1 lead after six innings.
“When (Donaldson) follows the things that we’re trying to do, she does a really good job,” Mason said. “But we’ve got to play defense. If we give somebody more than three outs, we’re going to be in trouble, and that’s what happened in the first game.”
Donaldson cruised after the first but hit a rough spot in the seventh.
Erin Tice singled and Alli Heimerman doubled her in off Donaldson for a 2-2 tie. But Mulvane then cut down the lead run between third and home three times, holding Andale to the one run and setting the stage for Holt in the bottom of the inning.
Andale wasted no time in the second game, taking a 1-0 lead off Donaldson on a double by Eck, who moved to third on Molly Hein’s sacrifice and scored on Kelsey Harlow’s RBI single – Harlow’s fourth RBI of the doubleheader.
In the opener, leadoff hitter Julie Lies had three hits and scored three times, and Harlow drove in three runs for Andale, which benefited from three Mulvane errors.
“We strung some hits together in the first game, but in the last game we’d get something going and shoot ourselves in the foot with our baserunning, so hopefully we learned some things,” Indians coach Doris Hein said.
