Maize’s Whitney Lucas approached the blue bracket championship game of the Titan Classic against Kapaun on Saturday with confidence. Lucas turned that confidence into two goals, and helped her team defeat Kapaun 7-1.

“I knew, we are a bit of a young team, but I knew we had the talent to beat them and we came out today and we played our game, and that’s exactly what we needed to do,” Lucas said.

The Eagles scored four goals in the first half. Kapaun stopped Maize from a shutout with a goal by Taylor Kruse with 3:14 to play.

“They (Kapaun) are a really good team, I just think that we played exceptionally well today,: Maize coach Jay Holmes said. “The girls are collectively improving game in and game out, compared to the first game of the season.”

Six Maize players scored.

“You have to have the intensity and the drive to play your defense against a team like Maize, because they’re offensive-minded and they’re very good at what they do,” Kapaun coach Alan Shepard said. “Today we didn’t come out with the intensity on defense.”

The red bracket championship game featured Hutchinson and Winfield in a matchup that was ultimately decided by penalty kicks.

Hutchinson scored early in the first half, but Winfield tied it up in the second half. After Hutchinson scored again in the second half, Winfield tied the game again just six minutes later.

“We’ve got a bunch of battlers, they won’t stop,” Winfield coach Don Birney said. “I think they don’t know how good they are, so as the season goes this is a good test for us, and it’s a character-builder.”

Four freshmen penalty kick shooters for Hutchinson gave the Salthawks the win.

“We didn’t play our best soccer today by any means, but we battled through it,” Hutchinson coach Chris Reeves said.
