Cotton, Hutchinson run by Kapaun

HUTCHINSON — Playing catch up was not the situation Kapaun Mount Carmel wanted Friday night against Hutchinson.

Trailing 14-0 in the second quarter in the Class 5A quarterfinal football playoff, the Crusaders got within seven on Jake Bean’s 5-yard touchdown run.

But Hutchinson’s Ja’Mon Cotton followed with his third and fourth touchdowns of the first half and Kapaun couldn’t rally in a 42-14 loss.

“We didn’t want to have to outscore them,” Kapaun coach Dan Adelhardt said. “Once we got back within a score, I thought we could close the gap but before you knew it, it was a two-, three-score game again.”

Hutchinson (10-1) will play host to Bishop Carroll in the 5A semifinals next Friday night. Kapaun ends the season 8-3.

The Salthawks got the game’s first break, recovering a Kapaun fumble at the Hutch 9. Cotton later scored from 5 yards, capping a 91-yard drive.

“That’s as good as I’ve seen Ja’mon play,” Dreiling said. “He allowed us to establish the run early and his performance is something our offensive can build on for next week.”

A Crusader fumble at their own 49-yard line led to Cotton’s second score, this time from 35 yards.

“Their defensive line is strong and real physical,” Cotton said. “Our offensive line made a great push and made my job easy for the whole game.”

Kapaun marched down the field on its next possession as Bean scored the first of his two touchdowns with 8:38 left in the second quarter.

Cotton returned the following kickoff to the Hutchinson 49 and soon added his third rushing touchdown, giving the Salthawks a 21-7 lead with 6:33 left in the half.

In the past Kapaun has struggled to get past the first round of the playoffs so the game presented a new feel for the Crusaders.

“Our kids did a great job working this season,” Adelhardt said. “They played their hearts out last week and tonight but we just couldn’t get momentum established.”
