Detmer's vault helps Carroll win Goddard track title

GODDARD — Miscommunication isn't always a bad thing, as Bishop Carroll senior pole vaulter Cara Detmer found out Friday at the Goddard Invitational.

Detmer was waiting on the runway for officials to raise the bar to 12 feet, 6 inches when she thought she heard her coach say, "Go," and took off.

She cleared the bar, but it turns out she had just caught the end of her coach's question "Where did he go?" and took off before the official height had been set. It was re-measured to be 12-3 1/2 — still good for the state's best mark this season.

"He's usually like, 'Take your time,' so I was a little surprised," Detmer said. "I thought I heard him tell me to go, so I just took off."

And she finally broke 12 feet, which was her previous best. Detmer said her goal is to clear 13 feet.

"In past meets, there's always been something a little wrong," Detmer said. "Everything felt right today. I was on the right pole and my stance was perfect. I thought I cleared 12-6, but I'm just so happy I finally PR'ed."

Carroll took home both team titles in perfect weather in Goddard. The meet served as the final tune-up before the season begins to escalate in importance — league meets are next week.

Season-best times were the goal for everyone, and some impressive marks were posted in the 300-meter hurdles.

Maize senior Lisa Tomasu lowered her season-best time to 46.01 to break her school's record and take first. The mark is the second-best in the state this season.

"It means a lot," Tomasu said. "I've been working so hard at it. Tonight was a good night and I had good competition, so I knew I had to take advantage of it."

The boys' race also featured the state's second-fastest time this season, as Andale's Ryan Horsch won in 39.65.

"Breaking 40 is probably the greatest accomplishment you can get in the hurdles," Horsch said. "It's that barrier you always talk about breaking. My steps were just on today."

Another school record fell in the jumps, as Goddard senior Kevin Triplett leaped 22-1 1/2 to win the boys long jump.

"My landing was a lot better," Triplett said. "I've been working on it since last year and my form has gotten a whole lot better."

Triplett summed up the meet's purpose with what he expected to take away from the day.

"I know what I can do now," he said. "I know what I'm capable of and I know what I'm going to do when it comes that time to do it."
