Derby has hired Brett Flory as its boys basketball coach, replacing Ryan Herrs.
Flory, who coached at Valley Center last season, was exactly the type of person the Derby administrators were looking for, according to athletic director Russell Baldwin.
“Honestly, the No. 1 thing that stood out for me … and all of Brett’s references is he kept being referred to as a wonderful character and an educator first and a coach second,” Baldwin said. “My philosophy is, I find the best educators, the best teachers I can, and they will be your best coaches. He’s very honest. He didn’t try to hide anything, any mistakes in the past and what he’s done to correct those. He’s the candidate we felt best to lead our program into the direction we want and being a good role model for our young men.”
