Sub-state basketball (3-1)

Sub-state basketball is in full swing. We had Class 4A boys and Class 2A boys last night, while 3A girls and 1A girls played, as well.

The Augusta sub-state is one of the most difficult with Augusta and Buhler playing a first-round game. Those are two good teams, and Buhler won last night. Buhler plays Hesston in the semis, while Trinity, which squeaked one out over Haven, plays Circle.

This has to be the toughest 4A sub-state. Do you disagree or agree?0

Let’s take a look at some of the other sub-states.

Class 6A

Boys

Heading into the season, it was easy to point to the Washburn Rural sub-state as being the most difficult. It has Heights, East, Southeast, Derby, Manhattan and Washburn Rural. It’s still tough, but not as tough as I would have expected. While Southeast is playing well right now, there were struggles for the first half of the season. Derby isn’t the team I expected it to be, either. It’s still a strong sub-state, just not as much as I thought it would be. Heights is undefeated, but will face the winner of Manhattan and Southeast, two 12-8 teams. Neither will be a walk in the park, especially Southeast because of the way the Buffs are playing and because it’s tough to beat a team three times in one season. An East-Washburn Rural final in the other sub-state will be a good one.

The Olathe North sub-state is the toughest, with Olathe South (17-3), playing the winner of Leavenworth (14-6) -Topeka (15-5). In the other sub-state within that sub-state, Olathe East (17-3) plays the winner of Free State (12-8)-Olathe Northwest (16-4). Olathe South and Olathe East are in the top five in 6A, while Olathe Northwest just dropped out.

Class 6A

Girls

I like the Dodge City sub-state because a Northwest-Goddard final would be a good one. The Washburn Rural sub-state is OK, on the opposite side of undefeated Heights. Washburn Rural (14-6) will likely face the winner of Junction City (14-6) and Southeast (13-7). Southeast is not the team I expected this season. Too many losses that shouldn’t have happened with all that talent. But it’s a scary team, regardless.

Class 5A

Boys

There really isn’t a great sub-state. It’s one of the problems this season in 5A — there are outstanding teams, but there aren’t many of them. I’ll go with the Pittsburg sub-state that has Gardner-Edgerton (13-7) probably facing the winner of St. Thomas Aquinas (11-9) and Pittsburg (12-8). Gardner and Aquinas are dangers teams, regardless of record.

Class 5A

Girls

The Pittsburg sub-state is tough with Aquinas (20-0) probably facing arch-rival Bishop Miege (15-5). Although Miege has to get by Gardner-Edgerton (13-7).

The Salina South sub-state is tough, too. McPherson (18-2) will likely face Newton (18-2). Salina South is 18-2 and in the other sub-state there, but it has to get past either Salina Central (11-9), which beat Salina South this season, or Emporia (14-6).

Class 4A

Girls

(4A boys is above, of course)

The Augusta sub-state isn’t bad at all. There’s Circle, Hesston and Haven. Those are three outstanding teams.

Class 3A

Boys

There’s a lot of teams with good records in the Garden Plain sub-state — Collegiate at 18-2, Conway Springs 13-7, Garden Plain 12-8, Douglass 15-5 and an Independent team that is 6-13, but has won four of five.

The Halstead sub-state is no joke, either. Remington is tough at 13-7, Hillsboro is 11-9, Halstead 11-9, Hutchinson Trinity is 15-5 and Sterling is 16-4.

Class 3A

Girls

The Marysville sub-state is loaded. There’s Jefferson North (20-0), Marysville (15-5), Atchison County (17-2) and Sabetha (17-3). That’s a rough sub-state.

Class 2A

Boys

The Inman sub-state is, well, just look at the records. There’s Moundridge at 15-5, Herington, which spent time in the top five, at 16-4, Inman at 15-5 and Berean at 19-1. Yikes. Whoever comes out of this sub-state has to be a favorite to win it all.

Class 2A

Girls

The Inman girls sub-state is difficult, too, with Berean Academy and Moundridge.

Class 1A-I

Boys

The Lebo sub-state has Bishop Seabury, which is better than its record because of its tough schedule, Centralia, Waverly and Lebo.

The Sylvan-Lucas sub-state might be even toughter, though, with Hoxie and Sylvan-Lucas with winning records, Quinter, Stockton and Lakeside.

Class 1A-1

Girls

The Lebo sub-state has Centralia, Waverly and Lebo. Not bad.

Class 1A-II

Boys

The Norwich sub-state looks balanced with Norwich, Cinningham, South Barber and Caldwell.

Class 1A-II

Girls

The Beloit St. John’s sub-state has Beloit St. John’s (19-1) and Thunder Ridge (16-4). The Norwich sub-state is tougher, though, with South Barber, Argonia and Norwich.
