While Southeast girls coach LaToya Randle sat far down the bench Friday night — sickness forced her to turn coaching duties over to assistant Jay Crayton — there was no loss of focus for the Buffaloes on the court.

Thirty seconds in, senior Kerisha Broadus got the game's first steal, one of 23 steals for Southeast in the 64-47 win over East.

"We came out intense and we wanted to keep it going," said Broadus, who had nine steals. "We got it once, and we wanted to do it again. We had that push."

"That's how we want to really always play," said senior Jamillah Bonner, who had 19 points and five steals. "We came out with intensity."

Takoya Thompson also had five steals for Southeast.

"They have quick feet and quick hands," Crayton said of the Buffaloes."... Sometimes on defense, their hands get down and we pick up silly fouls. Tonight their hands were active, and it paid off for us."

Southeast forced 35 East turnovers, scored 31 points off those turnovers, including their first eight.

"They came ready to play and we didn't," East coach James Cole said."... We never could find any momentum after that (start)."

With 4:54 remaining in the second quarter, Broadus stole the ball and Thompson scored in transition for the 24-7 lead.

Thompson finished with 12 points, while Brittany Maxwell had 19.

East was led by Relina Johnson's 15 points and Ceyaira Washington's seven rebounds.

Southeast committed 22 turnovers, but East failed to convert those into points. That frustrated Cole.

"The last five, six games, we've lived off creating turnovers and being successful," he said.
