There must be a big man drought in Haysville. Or at least that’s what Axline suspects. “I’m not sure if it’s in the water out here or what, but we’re going through a stretch here where we’re undersized every year,” he said.
In his four years at Campus, Axline said he has not coached a player over 6-foot-3. So it’s becoming a bit of a tradition for him to preach about the importance of rebounding. He likes how his team plays man-to-man defense, but “it doesn’t matter if we give them two or three shots a possession.”
Campus will rely on its two returning starters, Thomas and Meier, to produce offensively. The Colts have a bevy of slashers on the perimeter, but need someone to emerge as the team’s point guard. That might actually be Axline’s top concern. “I think you go as your point guard goes,” he said. “If he struggles, then your whole team is going to struggle.”
Coach Josh Curtiss
14-28 in two seasons
G Casandra Brown 5-5 Sr.
G Brooke Dickey 5-5 Sr.
G Alyson Krier 5-5 Jr.
G Logan Vann 5-7 Jr.
F Bre Smallwood 5-5 Jr.
F Danica Dorsey 5-10 Jr.
F Kaitlyn Keck 5-10 Jr.
Campus is a team that can relate to both ends of the experience spectrum. On one hand, the Colts have two four-year starters in Brown and Dickey. But after that, Campus has almost no one with much varsity experience.
Curtiss doesn’t necessarily view it as a negative. “There will be plenty of opportunity for girls to step up and contribute,” he said. The Colts have won seven games each of Curtiss’ first two seasons.
Campus won’t have much size to work with, so rebounding is naturally a concern. But Curtiss likes the team’s quickness entering the season. If the inexperienced players falter, Curtiss hopes his two returning starters can carry the load early.
