MAIZE — Things seem to be lining up nicely for the Maize soccer team, especially after taking down Dodge City 2-0 on Thursday night.

"Last year, when we were 19-0 and they came up and beat us in two of our last three games, it wasn't good," Maize senior Spencer Hoch said. "Being able to get them back... you just can't explain the feeling."

Maize (12-2) took control the first half, when Nick Maloney scored on a header with an assist from Jose Diaz on a corner kick with 14:42 left.

"Scoring the first goal is huge," Maize coach Mike Darrah said. "The two games we've lost they've scored first. It's in all sports. Scoring first and putting points on the board gets the momentum going."

Dodge City (12-2) went on the attack in the second half. The Red Demons outshot Maize 9-2 in the last 40 minutes, forcing Maize goalie Blake Andrews to perform some acrobatic moves to keep his team ahead.

With 29:35 remaining in the game Andrews deflected a shot off of a cross that drew an audible reaction from the crowd.

"On that cross I just knew he was going to have a free shot," Andrews said. "I extended myself out and made the save. He hit it at me. That's how it goes for goalies sometimes. With those other saves I had to be big and come out and do my best."

Hoch scored the second goal for Maize with 2:39 left in the game.

"Our whole point was to get outside and get crosses in," Hoch said. "That ended up working pretty well for us because Dodge City likes to play up the middle because they have pretty good center midfielders."

Next up for Maize is Northwest — a matchup between two of the top teams in the area.

"All I hear from Northwest is 'We've got to beat Maize, we've got to beat Maize,' " Andrews said. "We're going to come out with the win, I think."
