I love this time of year for so many reasons. It’s much more like football weather, for one. And now the games really mean something — no matter what team you are, what your record is, the postseason is within reach. Win your district, you’re in. Take second in your district, you’re in.
So let’s chat about districts.
First of all, let’s talk about the brilliance of district play or the stupidity of district play. Many years ago, someone mentioned to me about treating football like every other sport — everyone makes the postseason. The way to do this is have an eight-game season and the ninth game is your sub-state/regional game. Win and you move on. There would be regional assignments, just like in all other sports, and then they’d be seeded. This still falls into the way KSHSAA likes things done — geographically, so travel isn’t as much an issue.
Then there’s the six- or eight-team districts. Class 2-1A has gone in that direction, just like the 8-Man teams have.
I know there’s a lot of you out there who like this. Let’s talk about why.
