Quick strikes lift Kapaun Crusaders

It did not take long for things to get one-sided in Kapaun Mount Carmel’s 59-14 victory over West on Friday night at Cessna Stadium.

It took Kapaun nine offensive plays and just under one quarter to score 35 points.

“We needed to come out and hit them from the get-go and I felt like we did a good job of that,” Kapaun coach Dan Adelhardt said. “It doesn’t matter who plays across from you. You don’t play to the level of your competition. We have expectations at Kapuan that we want to achieve.”

Anchoring the Kapaun offense was junior running back Skyler Krehbiel, who ran for 159 yards and four touchdowns.

“This is really his first breakout game. He has just been solid for us,” Adelhardt said. “He hasn’t had the big numbers and big touchdowns, so it was good for him to get rewarded like that.”

The Crusaders, who improved to 4-0, attacked from the air as well. Senior quarterback Keaton Lewis was 7 for 7 with 141 yards and one touchdown pass.

“Keaton is the key. He is a great commander for our offense,” Adelhardt said. “We also have great receivers. It’s good pieces to the puzzle. We have good people who can catch the football and do something with it.”

The lopsided defeat was tough to swallow for the Pioneers (1-3, 1-3), especially after last week’s 69-0 loss to Heights.

“We got punched in the mouth,” Pioneers coach Heath Henderson said. “Our kids are still a little bit sluggish from last week. I’m never happy to lose a game, especially in the manner that we did, but I was happy that our kids didn’t quit.”

West was able to score two touchdowns in the second half to avoid the shutout.

Senior quarterback Dorian Flournoy connected with seniors Davion Hill and Chris Banks for 65- and 9-yard touchdown passes.

“We have to get better if we want to win next week,” Henderson said. “I think we fixed a few things. I think we have a shot at maybe turning our season around.”
