Weber, Carroll pound Northwest

Bishop Carroll coach Alan Schuckman made sure to remind his football team of its ultimate goal Friday night after a 35-7 win over Northwest.

He assured the Golden Eagles that celebrating a big win was appropriate, but he wanted them to focus on progress they’d made since losing the opener to Heights.

“We’re a lot better team than we were Game 1,” Schuckman said. “We were a lot better team than we were last week. Northwest was a physical football team, and we played well against them tonight.”

Schuckman also reminded them that they had to keep on improving if they planned on beating a team like Hutchinson in a district game. Quarterback Tyler Nance, who ran for two touchdowns, got the picture.

“This last Thursday was one of our best practices and it rained three inches,” Nance said. “We just want to keep moving forward each week, and I felt like we did that tonight.”

Carroll running back Brandon Weber did all of the heavy lifting for his team in the first half.

Weber picked up big run after big run and amassed 104 yards on nine carries in the first half. He finished with 138 yards despite battling through stingers. He had carries of 31 and 19 yards to set up a six-yard touchdown run in the first half for a 7-0 lead.

His 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown knocked the wind out of Northwest after the Grizzlies scored on a 17-yard pass play from Tevin Gettis to Cedrick Jay with 2:31 to play in the first half. Weber ran over a defender to get into open space, then stiff-armed another defender by the sideline and followed blockers to the end zone.

“Brandon is one of the most physical running backs we’ve had at Bishop Carroll since I’ve been here,” Schuckman said. “He had a few runs tonight, including that kick return, that had me going ‘Wow.’ It looked like he was on my Xbox.”

Carroll’s defense matched Weber’s intensity. It limited Northwest to 63 rushing yards.

Defensive back Max Martinez also returned a 40-yard interception for a touchdown with 10:57 remaining in the fourth quarter to give Carroll a 28-7 lead.
