Southeast shuts out North for first win

Southeast senior Nick Taylor made an interception to contribute to the Buffaloes' 14-0 win over North on Thursday, so he could have taken more ownership of the shutout.

But after watching the teams combine for 13 fumbles and two interceptions during intermittent heavy rain at Carpenter Stadium, Taylor surrendered to the downpour.

"I'd like to say it was our defense, but I have to give credit to the weather conditions tonight," Taylor said. "It was a great game, we shut them out — but the weather did play a big role."

Southeast found enough breaks in the rain to execute a promising passing attack that seems to be their best hope to rebound from an 0-3 start.

The Buffaloes fumbled on their first drive, didn't make a first down on their second and their third produced a missed field goal.

But after North's second lost fumble gave Southeast the ball on the Redskins' 38-yard line in the second quarter, Tevin Parks converted one play later on a touchdown pass to Taylor.

Parks threw a 32-yard touchdown to Tyrone Wright later in the second, and Southeast just missed a third long touchdown when Dexter Hayes was tackled at North's 1-yard line after a 35-yard catch in the final seconds of the first half.

"We've got a good group (of receivers)," Southeast coach Gary Guzman said. "It looked like (Parks) had time. But some of the time he was hurried up and he took big hits."

Southeast's six turnovers were one more than North had, but the Redskins' giveaways were more costly.

North fumbled inside Southeast's 30-yard line three times and missed its best chance to score when it fumbled on Southeast's 10 early in the third quarter.

Southeast earned its first win after being outscored 125-23 in its first three game. But because of the rain, progress was difficult to gauge.

"Both teams made a lot of mistakes and we were able to capitalize on a couple things," Guzman said. "But obviously we've got a ways to go. I'm happy for the win, but we've got a lot of work to do."
