There were some upsets last Friday that surprised me, and others that didn’t.
Winless Rose Hill upending my No. 1-ranked team in Class 4A, Andale, shocked me. I had picked Andale to win it all in 4A. But that rivalry is definitely a good one, although Andale had controlled their meetings since 2006. That’s an excellent win for Rose Hill, which desperately needed to get back on track.
Olathe North being upset by Olathe East is another one I didn’t see coming. Yes, I knew Olathe East had a good team, but blanking Olathe North? Shocker.
That meant my overall rankings changed, as did 6A and 4A.
Other upsets that didn’t surprise me was winless Northwest beating undefeated East and winless Derby beating undefeated Maize.
I saw McPherson on Friday at Andover Central and enjoyed watching that McPherson offense. Tyler Matthews is a nice quarterback, and I absolutely love his receivers. Especially Christian Ulsaker and Nick Gawanda.
The game to watch on Mac’s schedule is when it plays host to Gardner-Edgerton on Oct. 8. What a matchup of two excellent offenses that will be. Gardner-Edgerton just beat Bishop Miege.
Now, Mac’s win over Andover Central doesn’t mean the Jags are done. That team has a nice line and Alex Bontz does well coming out of the backfield. The Jaguars have some issues to figure out, especially with all those interceptions, but I think they’ll be fine.
