ANDALE — Rose Hill already had as many football losses in two weeks as in all of last season, so Friday night’s 31-8 victory over Andale, Class 4A’s top-ranked team, was a welcome boost.
“We played as a team,” Rose Hill coach Greg Slade said. “We played with enthusiasm and we played with great effort.”
Rose Hill (1-2) looked nothing like the team that limped into Week 3.
“One of the things we have talked about all week was that we need to worry about ourselves more than anything,” Slade said. “We needed to take care of our stuff and clean up our mistakes. If we did that maybe we could have some success.”

On their opening drive, the Rockets pushed 47 yards down the field, finishing with a four-yard touchdown run from senior running back LaQua Mayes.
Mayes scored the next two touchdowns with 26-and 12-yard runs.
He finished with 117 yards and no second-half attempts.
Andale countered with its only points on a 26-yard touchdown from sophomore running back Trent Horsch 51 seconds before halftime, cutting the lead to 21-8.
“We made a lot of little mistakes. We didn’t execute well enough to move the ball consistently,” Andale coach Gary O’Hair said. “We needed to get our offense moving and get theirs off the field.”
Rose Hill’s first drive of the second half netted another three points on a 29-yard field goal from junior Tyler Knight.
A seven-yard touchdown run by Rose Hill junior Hunter Lewis midway through the fourth quarter put the game out of reach.
“Anytime you lose, it’s tough,” O’Hair said. ‘We’re going to learn from this and get better from it. Obviously, we have some things we need to improve on and we’re going to go to work on that.”
O’Hair was not upset with losing to a previously winless Rose Hill team.
“Rose Hill has a good football team. To come out here and play as good as they did shows they have a lot of character,” he said. “I knew they were a good team. They got beat by two quality teams. Had they played the two teams we had played coming into this, they’d be 2-0 just like we were.”
