Carroll’s offense too much for Southeast

Against inferior opponents the last two weeks, Bishop Carroll’s football team has tried new things, such as occasionally putting quarterback Tyler Nance at receiver or relying more heavily on running back Brandon Weber.

They’ve worked, but since the Golden Eagles have outscored two opponents by more than 90 points, there probably isn’t much that wouldn’t have.

After Carroll’s 42-7 win over Southeast on Friday night, coach Alan Schuckman’s postgame talk started with next week’s game against Northwest. That’s when Carroll will know which adjustments to keep and which to scrap.

“We use these games to get better as a team,” Carroll quarterback Tyler Nance said. “We don’t look at our opponent, we just look at getting better every day, every week.”

Since losing its opener 21-0 to Heights, Carroll has outscored South and Southeast 101-7, and a fourth-quarter Southeast touchdown was all that kept Carroll from its second straight shutout.

The Eagles’ offense has more uncertainties, so Schuckman wants to know what could work best when the schedule becomes more difficult.

Friday, Carroll’s best option was Weber. His long first-half runs set up three short touchdowns, and he added a fourth score in the second half to finish with 103 yards on 16 carries.

“It was kind of one of those games that I needed,” Weber said.

Southeast’s offense couldn’t find success with any plan. Quarterback Tevin Parks’ first two passes went for negative yards; running back Bradan Smith had a late touchdown but finished with 18 yards on 20 carries.

Smith gained a combined four yards on his last 16 carries and Southeast had 46 rushing yards on 37 attempts.

“We’re trying to do a lot of different things and figure out what we’re good at,” Schuckman said. “Like I told everybody after game one, ‘We’re not this bad’, and after game two, ‘We’re not this good.’ ”
