South sophomore Kaale McCulloch spent the past week preparing for his first start at quarterback.

His best lesson might have been watching his opposition Thursday night.

Kapaun Mount Carmel senior Keaton Lewis was nearly perfect in passing for 203 yards and leading the Crusaders to a 56-6 win at Carpenter Stadium.

South scored first but couldn't muster any points after its opening drive. Kapaun improved to 3-0 behind Lewis, who completed his first seven passes and threw three touchdowns while running for another.

"Keaton Lewis played great tonight, made great reads," South coach Cory Brack said. "I hope, playing our young quarterback, that by the time he's a junior or senior he can play like Keaton Lewis. He takes control and he knows what he's doing."

The Titans moved DuWayne Kelly to running back to make room for McCulloch. The lineup switch paid off initially, as McCulloch completed a 16-yard pass to Devin Webber before Roque Villarreal finished South's first series with a 48-yard touchdown run.

South's progress proved not to be real. The Titans didn't convert their second first down until the fourth quarter and their next 15 carries after Villarreal's touchdown combined for four yards.

"We had about six, seven fumbled snaps," Brack said. "We recovered them, but it hurts a drive. We're not a third-and-14 team. We've got to get positive yards on each play."

Kapaun took a 7-6 lead on its first series when Lewis threw a seven-yard touchdown to Jack Martin.

Lewis was involved in Kapaun's next two touchdowns, running one in from one yard and connecting with Nathan Degenhardt on a 27-yard score. He added a 50-yard touchdown to Michael Martin in the third quarter.

"I just work on making no mistakes, completing every pass, carrying out all my fakes," Lewis said. "Just doing everything perfectly."
