Football (9-13)

What a crazy weekend, huh? Games in the Wichita area, Topeka area and KC area were suspended on Friday night due to severe weather conditions (specifically lightning). So it made for an odd day of high school football on Saturday. Except for those teams that didn’t play the second half of their games, choosing to call the game at the half.

There’s a comment on this week’s football rankings that Hutchinson should be ranked No. 1 in Class 5A ahead of Gardner-Edgerton. Certainly, the case can be made for that, especially after how poorly Hutch played early against Derby and still won big on Friday night. I am not writing off Hutchinson, as evidenced by this story I wrote on the Salthawks before the season.

What do you think?

Now who do you think is playing its best football after two weeks? And can we really tell?

I thought Jeff Lutz had a great lead to his story on the Bishop Carroll walloping of South High where he points out that it’s tough for coach Alan Schuckman to know just how good his team is after the first two weeks. The Eagles get shut out by Heights, then cruise against South. They need another game, you know?

East got a nice win over West to improve to 2-0. East plays Northwest this week, a team that is struggling.

Kapaun intrigues me because Southeast clearly dominated time of possession and plays this past weekend, but Kapaun won big.

And how about Andover Central, going into Salina Central and winning? That’s an excellent win for the Jaguars.

Andover, on the other hand, is hurting. Ben Croituru is out and then the Trojans lose a big lead after the delay on Friday night to Newton. Not a good loss in so many ways.

Andale continues to roll and takes on Rose Hill, which is 0-2. Rose Hill is desperately in need of a win, but I don’t think it gets it this week.

What are our thoughts on area football? Or football across the state?
