Varsity Kansas

Preseason football (8-4)

Anyone want to talk some football? Our football preview comes out on Saturday, Aug. 21, so I’ve been conducting my interviews for the stories that I’m working on.

Here’s a few observations:

The City League title will come down to Heights or Carroll. Which one wins?

I haven’t decided yet. Heights clearly has to be a favorite. It played in the 6A title game and returns one of the running backs in Dreamius Smith, a Kansas commit. Carroll doesn’t have Blake Bell but returns 15 starters. Remember last year when Carroll returned 3 starters and had Blake Bell? Yeah, Carroll will be fine.

Northwest again has a ton of running backs. Amazing. There’s always speedy guys there.

Teams will have to watch out for Kapaun. There’s a lot of talent on that team, including Michael Reynolds and Keaton Lewis, and a lot of experience. Kapaun and Northwest should fight for the No. 3 spot in the league.

There’s a ton of linemen to be watching this year. A ton. I’ll have a story on that.

Collegiate only has 4 seniors and expects to have 46 out for the team. I’m not surprised on that low number of seniors because the 2010 graduating class was spectacular. It will be interesting how Collegiate stacks up against Andale, which consistently gets more than 100 kids out and is consistently one of the top 4A programs in the state.

Gardner-Edgerton is in a tough, tough district — with Blue Valley, which dropped down from 6A, and St. Thomas Aquinas. That’s tough. QB Bubba Starling will likely have a decision to make next year — he has committed to Nebraska for football and baseball, but could be a first-round pick in the MLB Draft. What would you do? Take the $1 million signing bonus or play 3 years in college and possibly become a top 10, top 15 pick? No easy decision.

Feel free to add your observations about football. You know, we’re less than two weeks away from the start of practice. Sweet.
