SALINA — The upset run that included its opening-round victory against top-seeded Silver Lake ended Saturday for Valley Center in the Class 4A baseball tournament.
Topeka Hayden defeated Valley Center 12-5 in the third-place game at Evans Stadium.
After the Hornets scored a run in the first inning, Hayden's offense sparked. It scored five runs in the first, four in the second and the scoring ended with three in the third.
"We wanted to finish on a good note, but at the same time we made a good run, put together some good baseball over the last two weeks," Valley Center coach Chad Gerwick said. "We got to Saturday of the state tournament and only 16 teams are playing today, so for us that's a big step in the right direction."
Valley Center (8-18) got on the board first when Andre Vieyra drove in Craig Crossette with a groundout. The Hornets scored three more runs in the third inning and trailed 9-5, but couldn't get any more offense after that.
"We showed some life in the first inning, but then turned around and gave up that five spot in the bottom of the inning and I think that kind of got the guys down," Gerwick said.
Corey Kingsland went 2 for 2 and scored a run and Tate Anderson went 1 for 2 with an RBI. Tate finished the tournament 4 for 8 with six RBIs.
"Tate Anderson, he was big, but for us getting three games in the state tournament was huge," Gerwick said.
In the championship game, won 6-4 by Kansas City Ward over Spring Hill, Spring Hill had the tying runs on the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, but after a force out at second, a runner's interference call ended the game.
