Goddard's Irsik shines in hurdles at Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON—Not many times does a distance runner transition into a hurdler, so Goddard track and field coach Brian Wetta was a bit hesitant to give in to the notion.

But freshman Sarah Irsik, a varsity cross country runner in the fall, was adamant about trying out the hurdles.

It may be uncommon, but Irsik might be an even better hurdler than distance runner. She won the 300-meter hurdles and took second in the 100 hurdles on Friday night at the Hutchinson Invitational, where Hays took home both team titles.

“We didn’t know the full potential of what she could do,” Wetta said. “And what’s great is she hasn’t even met her potential yet. She is still learning the event.”

Irsik said she ran the event in middle school, so her form is passable. And the foot speed? During cross country season Irsik’s strongest part of the race was her kick at the end.

But the rise to one of the top hurdlers in the area was unexpected.

“It’s been a huge surprise,” Irsik said. “I just wanted to try them out. I had no idea I would already be near the top.”

In only four races, Irsik has reinvented herself.

“She’s only a freshman, too,” Goddard hurdles coach Stephanie Bush said. “She has no idea of where her potential is.”

No rest — Maize has great athletes in Miles Ukaoma and Danielle Walker, so they don’t let them go to waste. Ukaoma ran both hurdles race, the 400 and was part of the 1600 boys’ relay team. Walker ran the 400, 800, 1600 and was also part of the girls’ 1600 relay team.

“You just have to balance your time,” said Ukaoma, who won all four of his races. “You don’t ever really have any time to sit around, you’re always warming up for something.”

It was the first time this year for Walker to do four events. She added the open 400, which she took second in. But the value is working on her foot speed, which helps her in her main races, the 800 and 1600, which she both won.

“It definitely helps me out in the 800,” Walker said. “It’s good speed work and it really helps me out for the 800, which is the race I love.”

First-time welcome — Valley Center freshman Meagan Williams still doesn’t think of herself as one of the area’s best javelin throwers. But it’s hard to argue after she won the javelin with a throw of 115-3, nearly 10 feet better than second place and her previous personal best.

Williams said a change back to her original steps before the throw was the key.

“I really don’t go into it with much confidence,” Williams. “I’m just a freshman. I don’t think I will take away much confidence from this, but it did feel pretty good to win it.”

Back again — It had been awhile since Bishop Carroll pole vaulter Cara Detmer had cleared 12 feet in a competition. She did so on Friday to win the competition and nearly cleared 12-3, which would have been a personal best.

Last year 11-0 won Class 5A.

“I think I was lazy in pulling my hips up,” Detmer said. “I finally did that and pushed off the pole and cleared it.”
