In celebration of the 100th state track meet May 28-29 at Cessna Stadium, high school track coaches, athletes and long-timer observers were asked for their lists of top 10 meet moments. It's part of a publication chronicling 100 years of the meet available at the meet and through the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
The Eagle will present them each Sunday through the meet's conclusion. Past moments are available at VarsityKansas.com.
8. SM West's cathy saxon sets the 3200-meter standard
Girls ran the 3200 meters for the first time in Kansas in 1979, so it didn't seem like too big a deal when Shawnee Mission West's Cathy Saxon won the Class 6A race in 10 minutes, 32.4 seconds.
But 31 years and 186 runnings of the girls 3200 later, no one has bettered her time. Saxon, who later ran at Kansas State, also won the mile that day in 5:00.2.
